An Inheritance of Faith – Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9
"I wish we had heirlooms in our family," my daughter said, after telling me about some furniture and other possessions that had been passed down through several generations of a family she knew. Our family has not saved things in this way. Many of our ancestors were quite poor and owned little that would long outlast them. Others were the sort who got rid of everything they were not immediately using.
But our family does have one precious heritage: the Christian faith. We try to pass this on to our children and grandchildren. I remember the small rural churches where my grandparents worshiped. They passed on their faith to my father, who taught a Sunday school class, and to my mother, who encouraged family worship. All three of their children, living in widely different parts of the world, have been active members of Christian congregations. As one of my daughters prepares to join the church and another tells me about her Bible study group, and when I hear my grandchildren singing Bible songs, I know that they have a heritage that "neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal" (Matthew 6:19).
