Just Breathe - Read 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
While I was interning with the marine mammal trainers at the Minnesota Zoo several years ago, one of my responsibilities was to monitor the dolphins' breathing rates. Unlike fish, bottle-nosed dolphins are mammals and must breathe air. They surface every few minutes to exhale stale air and inhale fresh air. While watching and listening to the rhythm of their familiar forceful inhales and exhales one morning, I suddenly remembered the feeling of swimming laps and my own forceful, rhythmic breathing. For a moment I felt one with the dolphins -- both of us swim, play, and breathe air. The air we share is the source of our very lives.
As Christians we must also breathe spiritually. Each time we pray, we breathe in the Holy Spirit of God and receive the spiritual oxygen we need to live a godly life. Without oxygen, our bodies die; without prayer, we lose our spiritual vitality and our faith suffers. Cultivating prayer and intimacy with God can be as simple as taking a breath. This is what it means to pray without ceasing -- to live in constant communion with God and awareness of God's presence and power so that prayer is as natural and simple as taking a breath of air.
